Our Trailer has Arrived!!

Guess that means we better get to building!

Sunday was Tish and my one year anniversary — it’s crazy to think it’s already been a year since we eloped and then flew to Amsterdam/Berlin for our honeymoon. So much has changed since thing: we decided to build a tiny house; we updated and sold our house in Richmond; we sold my car; donated, sold or gave away any excess stuff we didn’t need/want; packed up our Honda Fit with everything we decided to keep (including our three animals) and moved across the country to my childhood home. Of course, we made sure we had a fair share of travel and outdoor adventures sprinkled in between. It’s been an incredible year, and despite the fact that our trailer was supposed to be here last Wednesday….the stars aligned and our (amazing) delivery guy wasn’t able to make it until Sunday. What a fitting way to start our second year of marriage! 40+ hours later and we have a house! (well, kinda)

I am finally done designing our tiny house on sketchup!! Yes, we counted the hours, or I should say we attempted to count them and stopped when we got to 40…sketchup is a tricky little bugger and I have developed a love/hate relationship with it. Mostly love, until I try zooming out and get stuck in the middle of a wall or piece of furniture and feel like I’m lost in purgatory for what feels like an eternity. Our First Week in Middletown

The past few days in our new space have consisted of unpacking boxes delivered by Fedex, a trip to Sacramento (Sac friends: I swear we were only there long enough to run a couple errands, go to Ikea……and eat at Sandwich Spot. I will be back soon to see all of you!!!), cleaning, treating the animals for fleas (UGH.), more unpacking and organizing, more flea treatments, and some much needed relaxation time with the family. Day 8: Winnemucca, NV to Middletown, CA

Bentley, the lost pooch

We made it!! Finally….

IMG_2930 2Our last day of driving was pretty rough, we were so very ready to be off the road and getting settled in to our new home (well, my old home) and new routine/life. We had a little hang up while loading up the car Thursday morning when Tish found a lost tiny poodle so we pressed pause on leaving to find his owner. Day 6: Denver, CO to Grand Junction, CO

Yesterday (day 5, technically) we took a much needed break from the car. We woke up and had coffee, then took advantage of the trail in front of our hotel and enjoyed our first “real” workout since we left Richmond. Tish went for a bike ride and I took Ani for a run. Well, I should say I attempted to take Ani for a run, but she was far more determined to swim than I was to run in the heat so we just decided to wade in the creek along the trail after a mile or so. It was lovely!  Continue reading “Day 6: Denver, CO to Grand Junction, CO”

Day 4: Kansas City, MO to DENVER!!!

Ritual morning rubs
Ritual morning rubs

We are so freaking happy — we have been planning trips to Denver for months and for one reason or another were never able to make it happen. BUT, we decided to take this opportunity to not just make it happen but take full advantage of having our little family here and making it fun for them (okay, mostly Ani) too! Today was a LONG day, but the last 2 hours that we pushed through were so worth it to stay here!

Day 3: Clarksville, IN to Kansas City, MO

Ahh…Middle ‘Merica. No other place like it…..

Today was our longest, and (no offense intended!) most boring thus far. All of our excitement happened early, before we even left the hotel room this morning when Tish strongly encouraged me to do a “short” morning workout with her and then we spent approximately 38 minutes trying to get Jack out from her hiding place under the bed. The workout was surprisingly rejuvenating, and we felt accomplished after flipping the bed up on its side to uncover our difficult middle child. Today was going to be great! Once the car was loaded and Jack was safely in her crate, we set off ready for another long day of nothing but dotted white lines. We passed through a bit more of Indiana, continued on through Illinois and then crossed the entire great state of Missouri. Day 1 of our Cross-Country Move

Today was our closing date, and our planned day to leave Virginia and head west to California. We set off at 1:30, only 30 minutes after our goal time when we woke up this morning…..and we made it to Lexington. No, not Kentucky. Virginia. We made it 140 miles. Before you start to judge, let me just say in our defense we were thrown quite the curve ball and ended up recovering pretty well, considering! Continue reading “Day 1 of our Cross-Country Move”

The House Sold!!

…now what?!

I think we are mostly happy about it, but it sort of felt like doom and gloom around here when the news came via text last night. It kind of feels like seller’s remorse: we made the decision to sell and then sort of came to terms with the fact that it probably wouldn’t appraise and we would be holding on to the house. That then became the preferred outcome, or if not “preferred” certainly the safest and most comfortable option for us. Continue reading “The House Sold!!”
